Remoulding the city- Blooming Calicut

Calicut Corporation kick-started the ‘ Blooming Calicut’ campaign with a view to beautify the city. As a part of the project, sculptures are being erected at major parts across the city.
“The civic body had entrusted the task of renovating the parks and increasing green spaces in the urban area to a consortium of the Thiruvananthapuram-based Sahasra Interiors and Exteriors and the Kozhikode-based Solus and Solutions on a build-operate-and-transfer (BOT) basis. The project was also aimed to beautify two parks and 10 major traffic islands.” , said Mayor M. Bhaskaran.
The renovated Kelappan Park at Nadakkavu had already been opened to the public. “Work is being done on time-bound basis at the Vagbhadanananda park in front of Government Homeopathy College at Karaparamba, which will be opened to the public on May 20th . Three traffic islands had also been inaugurated”, he added.
The first among the nine was placed in Nadakkavu ADGP office junction on Tuesday. Police Commissioner S Sreejith unveiled the statue of ‘white pigeon in hand’.
The statue of ‘Pathummayude Adu’, a central character in Vaikom Mohammed Basheer’s novel, will be raised at the Mananchira SBI junction by M T Vasudevan Nair The World Book Day which falls on april 23rd and this has been sponsored by DC Books. Kerala Sahitya Academy President U.A. Khader, Writer P. Valsala, Basheer’s wife Fabi Basheer, will also take part in the programme.
The third statue , William Logan’s ‘Malabar Manual ‘, will be unveiled by Mayor M Bhaskaran on April 29 at Model School Junction.
The fourth statue of ‘Pathammari’, will be unveiled on May 5 at Poonthanam junction by Deputy Mayor P T Abdul Latheef.
The renovated subway at Palayam will be opened on May 30. The island at the Pottammal junction will be inaugurated on June 5, Mr. Bhaskaran said.
Statues emphasizing historical importance and contemporary values had been incorporated in the concept, Mr. Bhaskaran said.
